– Antoine Richard

11-12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Affiche

J’ai hâte à leur premier album long intitulé «Kings in Sauron’s Service» qui suit le EP «Power from the East» sorti l’an dernier.

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Barrow WIght1

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Throaat2

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Amulet1

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Vulcain1

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Zemial1

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Razor1

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Droid1-gary lane

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Savage Master2

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Christianmistress2

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Voltax1

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Highspirits1

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Mefisto2 - gary lane

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Angelwitch1

Burn the whiiiiiiiiiiiite witch!

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Bannière

The third edition of Montreal’s best (in my own personal opinion) underground metal festival started on Thursday with a kickoff gig showcasing three excellent Canadian bands (Metalian, Occult Burial & Demontage) but since I’ve already seen all these bands, I decided to keep my energy for the two long evenings of the actual festival. Despite some of my reservations towards the fact that Wings of Metal should expand to a larger venue since the tickets are always selling out in a matter of hours, the Katacombes possess this awesome atmosphere and it’s the perfect place to meet a lot of great super metal people from all over Canada and the United States (cool to see John Gallo and Jean-Pierre Abboud!). The beer was flowing like a waterfall (man, metalheads sure drink a lot!) for this nice day of this warm Summer and I arrived early to catch the first band. Thanks to Wayne Archibald and Gary Lane for the pictures. – Antoine Richard

DAY ONE
BARROW WIGHT from Ottawa is a cool trio playing simple yet effective blackened heavy metal and it was by far their best set I’ve seen so far. They’re tighter than before and the addition of Jo (Iron Dogs, Zex, ex-Cauchemar…) on the drums gave them the necessary edge and skills to go forward. Led by Andrew, a charismatic manitoban, the trio’s main appeal is the fun Lord of the Rings theme. Without it they’d be a generic Venom inspired band but Andy‘s love for Tolkien is what makes them appealing to me. If it was about Satan, hell or whatever, I doubt I’d be interested. Songs like «Rock into Mordor», «Nine Horsemen» or the new one «No Sleep Till Gondor» (!!!!) are catchy, short numbers and like Mithril, they’re precious and unbreakable. You’ll always have a fun time with these boys and they’re getting better and better. I’m looking forward to their debut full length album named «Kings in Sauron’s Service» after the «Power from the East» EP released last year.

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Barrow Wight2

THROAAT from Brooklyn were up next with their first wave of black metal influenced amalgam of thrash/death metal and it was pretty cool. The trio composed of Dino Destroyer (Natur’s curly flamboyant guitarist), Grave Rat on bass and Impurifier on drums and vocals (top notch pseudonyms, guys!) destroyed. They’re a bunch of nerds who instead of discovering Weezer in high school, they got into Venom, Bathory and that’s perfectly fine with me. The vocals were vicious and recalled the development of extreme metal. It’s always nice to see a drummer who also sings, this definitely takes a lot of stamina! I haven’t heard their studio work but they were enjoyable live and I can understand why Zemial brought them on tour with them, they have the same old school approach to the black arts as the Greek champions. It was cool to start the main gig of the festival with a one-two punch into vintage black metal territories.

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Throaat1

AMULET was one of the bands I really wanted to see during Wings of Metal and they did more than deliver the goods, the goods were so great that it’s like if they were deep fried in duck fat and covered in bacon bits. The young British quintet played a super great set and managed to impress a lot of people in the audience (who was bigger than for the two openers). Their heavy metal is of course influenced by the great old sound of NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) but it feels fresh in its execution. Their short evil songs like «Evil Cathedral» or «Sacrifice» are extremely catchy and well written and while I liked their debut album entitled «The First» (the first of many, I hope?), their live energy was transcendent and convinced me that they’re the most promising English band of their generation. Their short singer was an impressive and energetic frontman, he’s not the best vocalist ever to play the style but his charisma is endearing. He’s more of a Kevin Heybourne than a Bruce Dickinson, soft speaking, melodic and super fucking catchy. Speaking of Iron Maiden, unlike them or Judas Priest, Amulet favored the more traditional lead guitar + rhythm guitar approach and it worked like a charm. Bonus points for the facial hair of all their members, mustaches are freaking cool, it’s so British and old school and I was seduced by their «metal is fun» aesthetics and music. It’s like if In Solitude decide to play faster and worship Angel Witch, Raven or Tank instead of Mercyful Fate. Come back to see your commonwealth friends any time, guys.

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Amulet2

I was there at VULCAIN‘s first North American gig in 2010 at the same venue (alongside Midnight, Inepsy and the debut live performance of Cauchemar) so I knew what to expect from these French veterans. They’re called the French Motörhead and there’s no better description to offer than this one, it’s rough, greasy heavy rock & roll. The Puzio brothers (Vincent – bass and Daniel – guitar, vocals) destroyed with a strong setlist with classics like «Pile ou Face», «Vulcain», «Ebony» or my personal favorite «Blueberry Blues» and four of five tracks from their 2013 album «V8» like the political «Lâchez-nous». While I like them a lot, their music is a bit samey and their set shouldn’t quite exceed the 45 minutes mark and it did. Some songs like the cheesy newer selection «Call of Duty» inspired by the videogame of the same name weren’t as good as the material from the seminal «Rock’n’Roll Secours». Nevertheless, it was an immense pleasure to see them again and it’s always nice some crowd interactions in French from our cousins.

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Vulcain2

ZEMIAL released one of the best albums of the last 10 years with «Nykta» in 2013 and I couldn’t wait to see how well the project of Archon Vorskaath (his parents call him Dimitrios) was on stage. I’ve been a fan for ages of this band and one of his other projects called Agatus and it was hard to believe that the Greek black metal legend finally crossed the Atlantic. Seeing this live was like seeing bands like Rotting Christ, Varathron or Septic Flesh at their peak (this was like 20 years ago) as Zemial is still highly pertinent, original and skilled. Their black metal is distinctive and there’s many different influences thrown in there. From tradtional heavy metal (there’s clean vocals), progressive rock, some folk touches (think of Melechesh’s approach, it’s all in the electric guitar riffs) and old school proto black metal. The band, like their tour buddies of Throaat, is a trio and Vorskaath handled both the drums and the vocals, he was marvelous on the instrument, especially during the atmopheric jazz break of «Into the Arms of Hades», a 10 minutes song and possibly my highlight of the whole festival. I’m pretty sure it was worth forty five minutes for the band to fix their gear. Their set was a varied affair with mostly numbers from «Nykta» like the aforementioned «Into the Arms of Hades» or the brutal might of the short attack of «Under Scythian Command» and the riffy epic of «Ancient Arcane Scrolls». The session live members were super talented as well. The leads of the guitarist were great and the bassist was wearing a phenomenal greek ceremonial robe to add to the band’s mystical occult energy. It was an ecstatic performance, in a perfect world, Zemial would play arenas. They made me travel to Ancient Greece for about an hour.

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Zemial2

Even though Zemial were my personal headliners, the show wasn’t over yet. The legendary RAZOR came on stage at around midnight to deliver a special 30th anniversary set consisting solely of 1985 tracks (so «Executioner’s Song» and «Evil Invaders»). Their set started with «Evil Invader»’s instrumental opener «Nowhere Fast» and the musicians were in shape. I can’t quite say the same thing for vocalist Bob Reid who shows his age a little. He wasn’t loud enough and his piercing screams weren’t totally incisive. I had to leave after about 30 minutes to hit the metro and save some strength for the second day but I was lucky to see the crowd favorite «Evil Invaders». My friends told me that their set was like 75 minutes, this is pretty long for a speed/thrash band like them!

11 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Razor1

It was great to see the Katacombes‘ crowd go totally insane during their gig, it was perhaps the best pit I’ve seen there since Archgoat’s presence at the Messe des Morts in 2012. Since I’m such a prude and shy person, I was able to see the action from the second floor and damn, being near the stage would had meant an «instant death» for anyone who never went to a metal gig before. Just like Mike Campagnolo‘s look, Razor are one of the definitions of «metal as hell» if you open your cult dictionnary.

DAY TWO
After a productive meeting with some friends of the big village of Quebec City at the Benelux microbrew (a place to try!), I didn’t want to miss the first band of the second day even if it was at 5:30, after a short contemplation of a BMX competition on St-Laurent, we entered the Katacombes for this final day of pure steel.

DROID from Toronto are one of the best young bands in the country and their debut EP «Disconnected» on Hard and Heavy Records (cool newer label releasing awesome Canadian metal like Hrom, Spell or Gatekrashor) was released during this festival. The trio’s sound could be compared to Voivod meets Vektor and speed metal. It’s technical but not overly so and there’s a lot of impressive, atmospheric instrumental passages. Jacob‘s vocals have the required amount of venom in them and his guitar skills are top notch (needed when you’re the only one!); Michael‘s bass was also high in the mix and he demonstrated his tapping techniques. Just like Barrow Wight the night before, I’ve seen them progressed on stage, they’re getting smarter, more original and just plain better with age. A band to watch, that’s for sure.

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Droid2

SAVAGE MASTER was up next and I wasn’t expecting much from the Kentucky band since I didn’t like their debut album «Mask of the Devil» released last year. I was also turned off by the Gimmick they decided to use. Their four musicians are dressed like hangmen similar to what The Mentors are doing and their singer, a woman is dressed as a BDSM mistress, high heels, tights, leather panties and a corset with chains and the likes on it. While I can understand this sort of Ghost-gimmick approach, music is sometimes relegated to the backburner and I think it’s the case. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with their heavy metal, it’s generic and the songwriting is a tad pedestrian. Stacey Peak‘s vocals are cool though, reminding me of Belgium’s Acid but I think that she’s not pushing the gimmick to its required peak, she doesn’t act like a mistress and isn’t quite as charismatic and energetic for a frontwoman disguised as such. Nonetheless, the crowd liked them, I’m just grumpy!

12 septembre 15 - Wings of Metal III - Savage Master1

I’ve been following CHRISTIAN MISTRESS since their debut album (the excellent «Agony & Opium») and I was happy to finally see them play in Montreal. They’re currently touring to support their third album «To Your Death» with High Spirits and Savage Master. The new album was officially released on September’s 18th but they were selling the silver vinyl edition that I decided not to buy in favor of buying more pizza and beer. Their singer, Christine Davis, is perhaps the most charismatic and beautiful singer I ever had the chance to see live (sorry, Blood Ceremony’s Alia O’Brien!) and compared to the previous frontwoman of Savage Master, she’s energetic and all over the stage. She’s not a very powerful singer or a symphonic diva but I really like her voice, it’s down to earth and has a sense of lovely urgency. The other members were also beastly on stage, especially their guitars who were trading cool solos and riffs for days. They played some strong numbers like «Desert Rose» and the title track from their debut album, «Haunted Hunted» and «Pentagram and Crucifix» from their sophomore album «Possession» or «Open Road» or «Neon» from the new one and their set had no weak moments. Christian Mistress plays heavy metal but their sound is extremely distinctive, there’s some sort of occult bluesy vibe going on. While we can link their sound to many scenes and influences, I feel that they have an original take on trad metal and their performance confirmed them as one of the best bands evolving in the actual US scene.

I took a pizza break after Christian Mistress and unfortunately missed half of VOLTAX‘s set. The first Latin American band to play the festival, this Mexican band plays pure heavy metal with some power and speed metal as well and they made a great first impression on the Montreal crowd. Armed with a singer named Jerry (haha!) who fucking rips it with his high pitched clean vocals, this dude has serious pipes (probably the best the Wings of Metal got this year), Voltax were an energetic band with a fiery stage attitude due to their flaming latin blood. One of the guitarist was barefeet and wearing these tight spandex pants, quite Maidenesque! I thought they were a bit generic in their 80s metal worship but their music is solid and well composed. It was fun to see a Mexican band though, that’s a pretty damn rare occasion. Bonus points for their skeletal puppet mascot and their exclusive tshirt with a cheesy French sentence on the back.

HIGH SPIRITS are always a blast live! I saw their first gig in the city last year when they opened for Kadavar alongside Cauchemar and it was awesome. I’m also a big fan of Chris Black‘s projects (he’s the sole studio member of High Spirits, he’s the mastermind of Dawnbriger and plays in other bands such as the excellent Aktor and Superchrist) and he never disappoints live. This time instead of only handling the vocals, he played the bass too but this doesn’t mean he wasn’t a dynamic frontman. There’s a good chemistry between him and his session dudes and they really have fun live. They played a good mix from their two full length albums (2011’s «Another Night» and 2014’s «You Are Here») with super catchy, singalong tracks like «Full Power», «Demons at the Door», «I Need to Know» or the lovely closer and signature track «High Spirits». I really like their heavy metal/hard rock approach, there’s an honest simplicity in the themes and its emotional drain is alluring to me. Compared to the darker and perhaps more intricate Dawnbringer, there’s a world of differences even if it’s still firmly rooted in the heavy metal genre. Perhaps not the cup of tea for everyone due to their melodic might but their cheesiness were a good fit for Angel Witch‘s headlining day. Bonus points for their white pants plus black tshirt uniform that they always use!

MEFISTO is a cult 80s Swedish thrash/speed/black metal which released two demos in 1986 (since then reissued as part of a compilation) before falling into obscurity. They reformed last year and we were lucky that Wings of Metal managed to get them to play their first gig ever for this edition. Or were we lucky? Yeah… not at all. To put it bluntly, Mefisto is one of the worst bands I’ve ever seen. During High Spirits, the trio arrived at the venue with their gear and were followed by a camera crew who were following the band for their grand event… That’s a bit pretentious and diva-esque for a band that isn’t exactly Bathory! The guitarist/singer also looked like a member of an industrial/nu metal band with his top hat and his wifebeater showing how much time he spent in the gym. But this doesn’t matter that much, what’s important is the music and their sound can be described as a sort of groove metal relying on impromptu soloing. It was like a tired Lamb of God/Pantera cover band who used to play proto black metal but decided to modernize their songs instead of worshipping their past endeavours. I guess that’s admirable but it was frankly bad. It was awkward to see and hear but their set finished like thirty minutes before it was supposed to, thank you for that, dear Satan. Cult bands like this one should stay dead and don’t taint their legacy (if we can call it that) forever. I’m not quite sure they deserved the second headlining spot for this last day but I guess I can count myself lucky as I’ve seen their first gig ever?

The legendary ANGEL WITCH were the final band of Wings of Metal and their set, while on the short side, was pretty damn good. Their self titled debut album remains one of the most important albums of the NWOBHM period. Their other albums didn’t reach the same level of quality though but their return with «As Above, So Below» in 2012 was a damn fine album. Their 1 hour set ignored «Screamin’ n’ Bleedin» and «Frontal Assault». «Into the Dark», «Dead Sea Scrolls» and «Guillotine» were the picks for their last album and they played seven songs from «Angel Witch» plus «Baphomet» from an early demo and the instrumental «Dr. Phibes» from the «Loser» single. Kevin Heybourne was in great shape and his musicians rocked hard with him including Mourn (a british trad doom that I love) ex bassist Will Palmer.

After SATAN (1st year) and HOLOCAUST (2nd year), it was incredible to see yet another NWOBHM legend in an intimate venue like the Katacombes and it was a great way to end this festival.

Burn the whiiiiiiiiiiiiiite witch!

It was another cool edition of Wings of Metal despite the lack of diversity compared to the two previous years (no doom or death metal!). The festival is still the most interesting thing to happen in Montréal for real metal fans and for the time of a weekend, it’s like going to one of those great European festivals. The atmosphere is chill, there’s many musicians drinking beer and hanging out with everyone else, it’s just a tremendous time. Thanks Annick, you’re the best.

Top 3 performances of the festival:

Zemial
-Christian Mistress
-Amulet

Wishlist for next year:

-Slough Feg
-Brocas Helm
-Liege Lord
-Visigoth
-Magic Circle (a return!)
-Deceased
-Crypt Sermon
-Atlantean Kodex
-Cromlech
Reino Ermitano
-Lord Vicar

Here’s a nerdy graph I’ve made to illustrate the origins of the bands who played the festival throughout the years. We can definitely see that there’s more foreign bands for this 2015 edition.
