Formé en 2011 et ayant sorti deux EP et un album en spectacle depuis, le groupe états-unien d’Occult Black Metal TELOCH VOVIN continue à propager sa vision des forces occultes avec ces cinq pièces parues il y a à peine plus d’un mois le jour de l’équinox d’automne.
C’est par l’entremise d’un duo guitare/clochettes que je suis envoyé «Further Down The Tunnel» afin d’entrer dans le monde de TELOCH VOVIN. Grâce à ses clochettes, «The Shadows Of Kadath» est une composition qui me fait penser aux mélodies des mobiles musicaux placés au-dessus des berceaux de bébés. Ça installe une atmosphère déstabilisante en créant un sentiment d’appréhension. Ce genre de mélodie de comptine ne laisse rien augurer de très sain d’esprit dans un contexte de Black Metal. J’aimerais penser à la douce folie de «Alice aux Pays des Merveilles», mais l’écoute me laisse plus une impression tirée de la comptine de «Nightmare on Elm Street».
Quand débute «Thaumiel», je constate tout de suite qu’il n’y aura pas de lumière au bout du tunnel. L’agression sonore et les vocaux sont oppressants; le chanteur principal est tout simplement dément dans sa façon de chanter. Pendant les sept minutes qu’elle dure, l’atmosphère est malsaine et la chanson donne si peu de répit qu’il m’est difficile d’y trouver un certain confort. C’est exactement ce que j’aime de cette composition. «Vena Cava», quoique beaucoup plus traditionnelle dans son approche Black Metal, continue à véhiculer cette aura noire.
Tout à coup, oh surprise, «Breathe Deep… Asphixiation Of The Human Condition» débute avec une mélodie au clavier avant de se développer par la superposition de diverses mélodies et autres sons synthétisés. Si j’écoutais du «Space Metal», j’aurais l’impression que le bruit de fond représente le bruit sidéral. Ici, j’imagine un voyage au tréfonds de mon être où le bruit de fond est créé par les échanges synaptiques de mes neurones pendant que les activités de mes cellules structurales résonnent parfois au son de mes battements cardiaques. La mélodie persistante des claviers a le pouvoir hypnotique de «Tubular Bells» alors que la rythmique dansante devient envoûtante.
J’ai été ramené à la réalité avec les cris guerriers qui débutent «Adoration/Vexation» et qui, en concert, feront lancer en l’air les saluts métalliques. Comme l’indique le titre de cette chanson, elle est fait de deux parties avec une portion Old School Melodic Black Metal en premier avant de se lancer dans un Black Metal bien crasseux et tout aussi torturé que le reste pour clore le EP.
Avec ce EP, TELOCH VOVIN a réussi à créer une musique qui est non seulement puissante mais également profondément sombre. J’ai l’impression d’être confronté à des vagues déferlantes de noirceur et de vouloir m’y enfoncer sans pouvoir me retenir. Pour ceux qui ont aimé Deathspell Omega, essayez TELOCH VOVIN.

Formed in 2011 and having released two EP and a live album, the Occult Black Metal band, TELOCH VOVIN continues to spread his vision of hidden forces with these five songs released little more than a month ago on the day of the Autumnal Equinox.
It is carried by a guitar/bells duo that I am sent «Further Down The Tunnel» to enter the world of TELOCH VOVIN. With its bells, «The Shadows Of Kadath» is a composition that reminds me of nursery rhymes from musical mobiles placed above baby cribs. It installs a destabilizing atmosphere by creating a sense of foreboding. This kind of rhyme melody does not feel very sane in the context of Black Metal. I would like to think of the sweet madness of «Alice in Wonderland», but the rhyme from «Nightmare on Elm Street» seeps in.
When «Thaumiel» starts, I realize immediately that there will be no light at the end of the tunnel. The sonic aggression and the vociferation are oppressive; the lead singer is just insane in his singing. During the seven minutes of this song, the atmosphere is unhealthy and the song gives so little respite it is difficult for me to find some comfort. That’s definitely what I like from this song. «Vena Cava», albeit much more traditional in its Black Metal approach continues to convey this black aura.
Suddenly, oh surprise, «Breathe Deep … Asphixiation Of The Human Condition» begins with a melody on the keyboard before expanding by superimposing layers of various melodies and other synthesized sounds. If this was «Space Metal» I was listening to, I would have the impression that the background noise is the sidereal noise oozing in from the depth of space. Here I imagine a trip to the core of myself where the background noise is created by the synaptic reaction of my neurons while the activities of my structural cells sometimes resonate to the sound of my heartbeats. The persistent melody of the keyboards has the hypnotic power of «Tubular Bells» while the dance rhythm becomes haunting.
I was brought back to reality by the warrior cries that begin «Adoration/Vexation» which, in concert, will bring the devil’s horns up. As the song title shows, this song is two different part with an Old School Melodic Black Metal portion first before embarking on a more bombastic filthy Black Metal just as tortured as the rest to conclude the EP.
With this EP, TELOCH VOVIN managed to create music that is not only powerful but also deeply gloomy. I have the impression of being faced with storming waves of darkness unable to control my desire to drown myself deeper and deeper into them. For those who loved Deathspell Omega, try TELOCH VOVIN.
