Unfolded

Demo

Unsigned/Independent

2014

Hailing from Sweden, there is an unprecedented expectation to have a particular sound and style, especially if your band is from Gothenburg. It’s never an easy task for some to seek recognition outside the realm of the DARK TRANQUILITY, IN FLAMES or AT THE GATES blueprint. However, UNFOLDED is one such act attempting to quench the appetites of those looking something outside the proverbial box. Their 2014 untitled demo certainly checks all the right boxes but does it reach further?

Opener, “Exit Humanity” gives a nod towards former Swedish alumni, GATES OF ISHTAR both in rhythm and melodic hook. Quite upbeat and punchy, the song boasts an exquisite extended solo that really highlights the demo’s potential right off the bat! Production wise, it’s clear that no expense was sparred as the sound is pristine and professional; everything comes through nicely with a snarled grunt pushed to the fore. Both “The Devil’s Lullaby” and “The Conscience You Deny” tread a mid-paced determination with the latter emphasizing subtle keys in the distance to accentuate the drama.

Unfortunately, “Infidel” maintains the status quo and never diverges from the accessibility of the previous numbers. A repetitious rhythm section carries forth through with a nice break for the apt solo, but doesn’t really rise to any climactic conclusion. As with the first cut, the last, “The Lonely Tune” showcases UNFOLDED’s capacity for writing hook-laden songs. Untypical sounding keys punctuate the lead riff and also drive the song to a satisfying end.

Sweden’s UNFOLDED don’t necessarily reinvent the wheel with their premier demo, but do write accessible mid-paced songs that penetrate the listener’s subconscious. Playing it safe, the band would do well to add flourishes of tempo variance to songs on a future full length and continue to capitalize on the glorious solos and toe-tapping melodies! You can get this demo on their bandcamp and it’s a name your price deal.
