Recently performing for the first time in over three years on American shores, Finland’s HOODED MENACE have long since been a group consistent in producing some of Death Metal’s most morose yet infectious riffs and atmosphere since their inception in 2007. I had the honour and privilege to sit down with bassist/vocalist, Markus Makkonen before their show in Montreal on May 26th a date that marked their first time here. Open and gracious, he generously answered questions about recent collaborations and the mysteries behind the music.

Chris – How does it feel to be finally playing Montreal?
Makkonen: It feels great! We’re really looking forward to playing in Canada for the first time. We’ve heard about the fans and how fantastic the Montreal Metal scene is.
Chris – How did you know that Montreal would be a good place to perform?
Makkonen: Actually, I’d heard a lot about the city from people through emails and of course tape my trading buddies. Word of mouth helped to make the decision easy as well.
Chris – How has your third album, “Effigies of Evil” been received by critics and fans so far since its release in 2012?
Makkonen: The album has been really well received by the critics. There hasn’t been a lot of bad reviews and it helps when you are backed by a reputable label like Relapse Records who have an affinity for promotion.
Chris – You seem to be very productive in writing material, releasing three full lengths, two eps and a slew of splits with various other acts since 2007. Where does all this creativity come from?
Makkonen: Well, in the beginning, Lasse Pyykko (guitarist and studio vocalist) and Pekka Koskelo (drums) were the main force behind the music. Not touring enabled them to devote more time to writing and while spilt albums are easy to put together, it just came out naturally. We’ve done a split with the Japanese band, COFFINS in 2010 another with the U.S. band ILSA and this year the split will be with LOSS, an act from Tennessee. It’s called, “A view From the Rope” and the song on that one, “Monuments of Misery” is a throwback to early ‘90’s Doom, like ANATHEMA. The music of HOODED MENACE is very slow and “horrific”.
Chris – In your view, is this a conscious decision for the sound to reflect the lyrics or the themes of “horror”?
Makkonen: Yes, they work together. We are very inspired by horror films and we’re often described as a mix of both AUTOPSY and CANDLEMASS. The “horror theme” is really great because there’s an endless source of inspiration within.
Chris – You have an ep. out now called “Labyrinth of Carrion Breeze”. Is there a stylistic departure from past records?
Makkonen: “Effigies of Evil” was faster than what we normally play. “Labyrinth…” is very “doomy”. We decided to go back to the slower range material or at least, mid-paced stuff. The ep will mark the first time HOODED MENACE has a full line-up. So, each member’s performance is bound to instill a different dynamic when you have more people participating with their own influences. The label for the ep. and the split record, “A View From the Rope” with LOSS are both on Doomentia Records.
Chris – Are you still collaborating with Relapse too?
Makkonen: Our deal with Doomentia Records consists of releasing eps and splits that are under 20 minutes in length. For full lengths that are longer, Relapse is handling those. It a good partnership and it works quite well. We’re actually going to start working on the next full album at the end of this year, beginning of 2015 and may work with a different producer this time to get a fresh perspective.
Chris – On album credits, Tanya Sim and Kevin Campbell are noted as being the people who write the lyrics. Can you elaborate on this collaboration?
Makkonen: Tanya and Kevin are both HUGE Horror movie fans and have been in contact with the band for quite some time. They live in Canada and being so knowledgeable about the genre, we felt it was natural that they contribute lyrics.
Chris – Based on the line-up for the recent ep. and spilt album, is it safe to say that HOODED MENACE are now a foursome?
Makkonen: Yes, I perform bass in the studio while Lasse Pyykko does the vocals since he has such a great voice! While writing the demo material, we just felt that Lasse’s voice was the right choice and suited the music better. I also play in another band called SADISTIK FOREST, which is basic Death Metal with some Grind influences and that’s where Lasse found me.
Chris – The video for “Crumbling Insanity” is a live video spliced with horror and occult footage. Can you describe the process of making the video and do you have future plans to make more?
Makkonen: Making videos if hard. A “story” needs to be there otherwise, random footage just won’t work. When Lasse made the video, the performance was captured in Helsinki, Finland. I wasn’t apart of HOODED MENACE yet but I know that the band used the same guy who has worked with ULVER.
Chris – This year is indeed a busy year for you. Are there any other plans in the future besides touring?
Makkonen: Certainly. We are going to start writing the new album soon. The band is in a really good place right now with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. We’re very excited! HOODED MENACE have a lot to be happy about having just played the Maryland Deathfest and being able to play in North America for the first time with me in the line up!
Chris – With added exposure and touring experience, one can only imagine where their “dark, dreadful” path will lead…

Chris – Comment vous sentez-vous à l’aube de finalement jouer une 1ère fois à Montréal?
Makkonen: C’est génial! Nous sommes vraiment emballés à l’idée de jouer au Canada pour la 1ère fois. Nous avons entendu parler des fans et à quel point la scène metal montréalaise est fantastique.
Chris – Comment avez-vous su que Montréal serait une bonne place pour venir jouer?
Makkonen: En fait, j’avais beaucoup entendu parler de votre ville via mes courriels et bien sûr mes buddies de tape trading. Le bouche-à-oreilles fait aussi des merveilles quand vient le temps de prendre des décisions.
Chris – Quelle a été la réception de la part des critiques et fans depuis la sortie de votre 3ème album, “Effigies of Evil” en 2012?
Makkonen: L’album a été très bien reçu par les critiques. Il n’y a pas eu beaucoup de mauvaises revues et ça l’aide d’être appuyé par un label réputé comme Relapse Records qui s’occupe très bien de la promotion.
Chris – Vous me semblez être très productifs côté écriture puisque vous avez sorti 3 albums complets, 2 EP et une floppée de splits avec diférents groupes depuis 2007. D’où vous provient toute cette créativité?
Makkonen: Et bien au début, Lasse Pyykko (guitariste et vocaliste de studio) et Pekka Koskelo (batterie) étaient la force première derrière notre musique. Le fait de ne pas faire les tournées leur permettait d’investir plus de temps dans l’écriture et comme les splits sont plus facile à monter, ce fut comme naturel de faire de cette manière. On a fait un split avec le groupe japonais, COFFINS, en 2010, un autre avec les États-Uniens de ILSA et cette année, on fera un split avec LOSS, un groupe du Tennessee. Il s’intitulera “A view From the Rope” et notre pièce sur ce split, “Monuments of Misery”, nous ramène à l’époque du doom des années 90, comme du ANATHEMA. La musique de HOODED MENACE est très lente et horrifiante».
Chris – Dans votre vision de la chose, est-ce une décision consciente de faire en sorte que la musique reflète les paroles ou les thèmes centrés sur «l’horreur»?
Makkonen: Oui, ils vont ensemble. Nous sommes très inspirés par les films d’horreur et nous sommes souvent qualifiés comme un mix de AUTOPSY et CANDLEMASS. Le thème de «l’horreur est vraiment génial car c’est une source d’inspiration sans limite.
Chris – Vous avez un nouvel EP disponible intitulé “Labyrinth of Carrion Breeze”. Est-ce un pas afin de s’éloigner du style des sorties précédentes?
Makkonen: “Effigies of Evil” était plus rapide que ce que nous jouons habituellement. “Labyrinth of Carrion Breeze” est très doom. Nous avons décidé de retourner à des pièces plus lente, à tout le moins mid-tempo. Le EP marquera la 1ère fois que HOODED MENACE a un full line-up. Alors, la présence et performance de chaque membre a tendance à instiller une différente dynamique quand plus de monde participe à la composition et chacun amène ses influences. Le EP et le split, “A View From the Rope”, avec Loss seront tous 2 sur Doomentia Records.
Chris – Collaborez-vous toujours avec Relapse Records aussi?
Makkonen: Notre entente avec Doomentia Records consiste à faire paraître des EP et des splits de moins de 20 minutes. Pour les albums complets qui sont plus long, c’est Relapse Records qui s’en occupe. C’est donc un bon partenariat et ça marche très bien comme ça. Nous allons bientôt travailler sur notre prochain album complet à la fin de l’année et au début de l’autre. Nous travaillerons peut-être avec un nouveau producteur cette fois afin d’avoir une nouvelle perspective.
Chris – Dans les crédits de l’album, Tanya Sim and Kevin Campbell sont inscrits comme responsables des paroles. Pouvez-vous nous parler de cette collaboration?
Makkonen: Tanya and Kevin sont 2 fans finis des films d’horreur et sont dans le giron du groupe depuis un bon boutte de temps. Ils vivent au Canada et connaissent tellement le genre qu’il a semblé normal de faire appel à eux pour les paroles.
Chris – D’après le line up sur le EP et split récents, est correct de dire que Hooded Menace est maintenant un quatuor?
Makkonen: Oui, je joue la basse en studio pendant que Lasse Pyykko s’occupe des vocaux car il a tellement une belle voix! Pendant que nous écrivions le matériel, nous avons senti que la voix de Lasse était le choix parfait et correspondait plus à notre musique. Je joue aussi dans un autre groupe qui s’appelle SADISTIK FOREST, qui est du Death Metal assez générique avec quelques influences Grind et c’est là que Lasse m’a découvert.
Chris – La vidéo pour “Crumbling Insanity” est une vidéo live qui inclut des scènes occultes et d’horreur. Pouvez-vous nous parler du processus de réalisation de cette vidéo et avez-vous des plans pour en faire d’autres?
Makkonen: Faire des vidéos est difficile. Ça prend une histoire sinon des images au hasard ne fonctionnent tout simplement pas. Quand Lasse a fait la vidéo, la performance live a été filmée à Helsinki, Finlande. Je n’étais pas encore dans HOODED MENACE mais je sais que le groupe a utilisé le même gars qui avait travaillé avec ULVER.
Chris – Cette année en est une chargée pour vous. Y a t’il d’autres plans pour le futur outre faire des tournées?
Makkonen: Certainement, nous allons commencer à écrire le nouveau matériel pour le prochain album. Le groupe se trouve à une très bonne place en ce moment et nous avons beaucoup d’énergie et d’enthousiasme. Nous sommes très excités! HOODED MENACE a plusieurs raisons d’être heureux présentement puisque nous venons tout juste de jouer au Maryland Deathfest et pouvons maintenant jouer en Amérique du Nord pour la 1ère fois avec ce line up!
Chris – Avec une visibilité additionnelle et l’expérience acquise grâce aux tournées, nous ne pouvons qu’imaginer où les mèneront les chemins sombres et épouvantables qu’ils suivent….
