Le trio brésilien BLACKNING, formé en 2013, a sorti localement l’album pleine longueur «Order Of Chaos»en décembre 2014 puis en Europe en avril 2015. C’était sa première parution en carrière. Pas de démo, pas de EP, il s’est lancé avec 9 chansons originales et une reprise d’Overdose pour un total de 35 minutes de Thrash.
C’est avec une douce mélodie à la guitare accompagnée d’une rythmique militaire à la batterie que débute «Thy Will Be Done» avant de s’enflammer et offrir un Thrash incisif qui ne réinvente pas la roue mais a la particularité d’être original. Les riffs de guitare rentrent au poste pendant que la batterie offre une rythmique endiablée, le tout bien appuyé par le vocal qui n’est pas sans rappeler un autre brésilien, Max Cavalera. «Terrorzone» suit en gardant la pédale au tapis. Pas de niaisage ici, on sent un sentiment de vengeance et de révolte qui est contagieux. Et cette contagion devient de plus en plus effective avec «Unleash Your Hell» dont le refrain sera sûrement entonné en choeur par la foule lors des concerts. D’une pièce à l’autre, il y a toujours une petite particularité qui fait que mon attention est gardée sur le qui-vive et c’est ce qui a fait que j’ai pas trop grinché des dents lors de la passe cheesy avec le solo de guitare au milieu de «Death Row». Par contre, le spoken word juste avant est cool.
Après «Against All» et «Death Row», deux pièces que je trouve ordinaire, je me demandais si BLACKNING venait de plafonner mais heureusement, ça repart solide pour le reste de l’album. On retrouve toute l’agressivité du début.
L’album se termine avec la reprise de «Children Of War» d’Overdose. Je ne suis pas un grand fan de reprise quoique je dois avouer que celle-ci est bien exécutée et offre un bel hommage à ces pionniers du Metal brésilien mais elle n’amène somme toute rien de plus à l’album à part attirer les plus frileux qui doivent voir un nom connu sur une pochette d’album avant de s’intéresser à un nouveau groupe. Pour ceux qui ne savent pas, Overdose a fait paraître un split avec Sepultura en 1985.
Quoi dire en terminant sinon que ce premier album des brésiliens vaut la peine que vous y prêtiez une oreille attentive car dans un genre qui est toujours dans l’ombre des grands groupes des années 1980-90, BLACKNING offre un Thrash Metal qui évite le piège de justement ressembler aux leaders du genre. Leurs compositions sont solides, punchées, agressives et ont toutes un petit quelque chose qui fait qu’elles me sont restées rapidement en tête. C’est un album à apprécier en headbangant de préférence.

The Brazilian trio BLACKNING, formed in 2013, released their first full-length album, «Order Of Chaos» in April 2015. No demo, no EP, they started with 9 original songs plus a cover of Overdose for a total of 35 minutes of Thrash Metal. Why talk about it after more than a year? Because it is a debut album and indeed a good one but let’s see further.
A sweet melody on guitar accompanied by a military rhythmic on drums begins «Thy Will Be Done» before shifting to high gear and exploding in an incisive Thrash Metal which does not reinvent the wheel but has the distinction of being original. No mimicking and gimmicking here. The guitar riffs soar in with rage while the drums provide a frenzied rhythm, all well supported by the vocal that is reminiscent of another Brazilian, Max Cavalera. «Terrorzone» follows keeping the pedal to the carpet. No fooling around here, we feel a contagious sense of revenge and revolt. And this contagion becomes more effective with «Unleash Your Hell» whose chorus will surely be sung by the crowd at concerts. From one song to another, there is always a small feature that keeps my attention on the alert and that is probably what prevented me to cringe when I heard the cheesy part with the guitar solo in the middle of «Death Row». By cons, just before the solo, the spoken word is cool.
After «Against All» and «Death Row», two songs kind of ordinary, I wondered if BLACKNING had given all they had but luckily it restarts solidly for the rest of the album. I hear again all the aggressiveness of the beginning.
The album ends with a cover of Overdose‘s «Children Of War». I am not a big fan of covers, although I must admit that this one is well executed and provides a beautiful tribute to these lesserknown (maybe!?) pioneers of Brazilian Metal but all in all it brings nothing more to the album except maybe attract those that need to see a familiar name on the album credits before paying attention to a new group. For those who do not know, Overdose released a split with Sepultura in 1985.
I must say that BLACKNING‘s first album is worthy that you pay it close attention because in a genre that is always in the shade of the big names of the 1980-90, BLACKNING offers a Thrash Metal that avoids the trap to sound like copycat. Their compositions are solid, punchy, aggressive and all have a little something that seeps in and cheerfully buzz at the back of my head. This is an album to enjoy preferably while headbanging or fist pumping in the air.
