Le groupe allemand de Goth Metal, LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE vient de faire paraître en août dernier le onzième album d’une discographie qui compte également deux démos et deux EP depuis sa formation en 1993 et la sortie deux ans plus tard de son tout premier «…And the Wings Embraced Us» (1995). Toujours mené par son fondateur et dernier membre original Olivier Nikolas Schmid, le groupe a fait un bon bout de chemin depuis ses débuts faisant passer sa musique du Doom Metal au Goth Metal au fil des ans pour finalement s’établir comme un chef de file de ce style avec la sortie de «Ave End» (2004) et «Filthy Notes for Frozen Hearts» (2006). Voici ce que j’ai pensé de son plus récent album, «Hope is Here», paru trois ans après «Antiadore» (2013) .
Premièrement, c’est une musique très tranquille et accessible que l’on peut facilement entendre à la radio. La musicalité est simple, mais très efficace. C’est des riffs très accessibles à tout le monde. Des belles ballades légèrement dépressives qui ne nous remontent pas le moral, mais qui font toujours du bien quand on est dans les profondeurs de nos idées les plus obscures.
Dès le début de l’album, j’ai été charmé par «The Worship Of Counting Down». J’adore la petite mélodie de guitare. J’adore la jolie voix du chanteur qui me semble parfaite pour ces paroles très profondes sur le mal de vivre dans notre société actuelle. J’aime également que la batterie s’enflamme alors que la guitare reste tranquille. Les variations musicales de tranquille à un peu plus rythmées à tranquille de nouveau me transportent et l’arrivée de la mélodie répétitive au piano crée une atmosphère romantico-nostalgique pendant que la trame des claviers à l’arrière-plan drape le tout d’un voile lancinant de désespoir.
On enchaîne ensuite avec «My Halo Ground», une pièce à la rythmique qui rappelle le New Wave et le Dark Wave mais boosté aux stéroïdes. Imaginez du Simple Minds, The Cult ou encore Fields of Nephilim en version heavy et laissez vous transporter vers le plancher de danse le plus près.
Avec «Hope is Here», on sent fortement le côté romantique bien appuyé par les orchestrations languissantes en arrière-plan. La progression bien que relativement simple construit un crescendo qui mène vers un barrage sonique qui ondoie comme les lumières changeantes d’une aurore boréale alors que le titre de la pièce servant de refrain, se veut un cri déchirant d’espoir.
Avec «Aramis» la batterie se met en évidence et sort du carcan rythmique qu’elle s’imposait depuis le début. On a ici des rythmiques atypiques qui troublent cette ambiance qui serait un peu pop sans ça.
«A Million Miles» sort un peu plus de muscles musicalement mais reste tout de même assez smooth par l’entremise de la ligne mélodique du chant. Puisant dans cette énergie plus Rock, le seul solo de guitare de l’album vient nous rappeler que LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE avait quand même un son plus heavy sur ses albums précédents.
«Pageant» est totalement particulière avec ses ambiances. Je vais dire de quoi de spécial ici, le début de la pièce m’a fait penser à Calexico et le Southwest Desert Rock avec sa guitare au son country alors que plus loin le refrain m’a fait penser à «Dark Side of the Moon» de Pink Floyd. Ça fait une pièce qui, aussi bizarre que ça puisse paraître, accompagnerait très bien «The Last Day On Earth» de Marilyn Manson sur la playlist de votre ipod.
Alors que «You, My North» se veut douce bien qu’elle offre aussi un crescendo typique de la musique de LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE, «Awake» avec ses orchestrations s’impose avec une certaine majesté. Suit l’interlude «The Path Of Broken Homes» qui n’est pas sans rappeler l’univers de Tangerine Dream avant d’enchaîner avec «Timbre», la pièce comportant les moments les plus heavy de l’album tout en gardant ce côté nostalgique. L’album se termine avec «Black Moon», un duo guitare-piano qui amène l’atmosphère appropriée afin de clore cet album telle la musique annonçant la dernière scène d’un film et cristallisant d’un même coup l’impact de celle-ci et également de toute l’histoire racontée au fil de l’album.
LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE a fait paraître son premier album concept racontant le mal de vivre d’un jeune garçon rejeté et la musique rend très bien les émotions sombres et tristes qui accompagnent les sentiments de rejet. Les pièces se succèdent en alternant le côté smooth et nostalgique avec le côté plus agressif mais ça reste quand même plus smooth que ce que le groupe nous a proposé sur ses albums précédents. Les amateurs de Katatonia, Paradise Lost et autres groupes de Goth Metal avec un penchant certain vers le doom devraient définitivement écouter cet album.

The German Goth Metal group, LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE released in August the eleventh album of a discography which also includes two demos and two EP since its formation in 1993 and the release two years later of its very first «...And the Wings Embraced Us» (1995). Always led by its founder and last original member Olivier Nikolas Schmid, the band has come a long way since its beginnings with its music moving from Doom Metal to Goth Metal over the years to finally establish itself as one of the leaders of this style with the release of «Ave End» (2004) and «Filthy Notes for Frozen Hearts» (2006). Here’s what I thought of their most recent album, «Hope is Here» released three years after «Antiadore» (2013).
First, it is very quiet and accessible music that can be easily heard on the radio. Musicality is simple, but very effective. These are riffs very accessible to everyone. It proposes beautiful, slightly depressive ballads that do not sparkle joy around, but which is good when I am in the depths of my most obscure ideas.
From the beginning of the album, I was charmed by «The Worship Of Counting Down». I love the gentle guitar melody. I love the warm voice of the singer that seems perfect for these words about the evil of living in our present society. I also like that the drum at some point ignites while the guitar remains quiet. The musical variations from quiet to a little more rhythmic to quiet again carry me and the arrival of the repetitive melody on the piano creates a romantico-nostalgic atmosphere while the keyboards in the background drape it all of a haunting veil of despair.
Follows «My Halo Ground», a rhythmic track reminiscent of the New Wave and the Dark Wave but boosted with steroids. Imagine Simple Minds, The Cult or Fields of Nephilim in Heavy mode and let yourself be transported to the nearest dance floor.
With the title track «Hope is Here», I felt strongly the romantic side well supported by the languishing orchestrations in the background. The progression, although relatively simple, builds a crescendo that leads to a sonic barrage that waves like the Northern Lights, while the title of the song used as a refrain becomes a heart-rending cry of hope.
With «Aramis» the drums highlight and leave the rhythmic shackles bounding it from the beginning. Here, atypical rhythms disturb this atmosphere that would be a little pop without it.
«A Million Miles» releases a little more muscles musically but remains quite smooth through the melody line of the lyrics. Drawing in this energy more Rock, the only guitar solo of the album reminds me that LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE can be heavier than what I heard so far.
«Pageant» is totally unique with its country music guitar, reminding me of Calexico and the Southwest Desert Rock, while the refrain brought to my mind «Dark Side of the Moon» from Pink Floyd. It gives a song that, as weird as it can seem, would mix perfectly with Marilyn Manson‘s «Last Day On Earth» on the playlist of your ipod.
While «You, My North» is gentle though it also offers a crescendo typical of the music of LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE, «Awake» with its orchestrations imposes itself with a certain majesty. Follow the interlude «The Path Of Broken Homes» which reminded me of the universe of Tangerine Dream before continuing with «Timbre», the track featuring the heaviest moments of the album while keeping this nostalgic side. The album ends with «Black Moon», a guitar-piano duo that brings the appropriate atmosphere to close this album as the music announcing the last scene of a film and crystallizing at the same time the impact of this last scene and also at the same time of the whole story told throughout.
LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE released its first concept album in its career relating the story of a little boy rejected, outcast cause he is not like the other ones and the songs conveys all the dark and sad emotions usually coupled with rejection. The songs follow one another alternating the smooth and nostalgic side with the more aggressive side but still, it is the smoothest album it offered so far. Fans of Katatonia, Paradise Lost and other Goth Metal bands with a definite inclination towards doom should definitely listen to this album.
