Comment commencer cette revue? Je vous avoue tout de suite que je suis encore un peu déstabilisé par ma première écoute. Dans un cas comme ça, aussi bien commencer par le début.
EYE OF NIX est un groupe de Seattle formé en 2012. Il a fait paraître un démo en 2013 et «Moros» est leur première parution officielle sortie au mois d’avril 2015. J’ai reçu le format qui est ressorti le 6 novembre agrémenté de deux pièces bonus.
Maintenant que le pedigree est livré, je suis encore un peu incertain sur ma façon de vous parler de cet album. Bon, je vais vous avouer tout de suite que cet musique se démarque définitivement de la masse ce qui dès le début est un excellent point en sa faveur mais même temps, il risque d’être rejeté du revers de la main par plusieurs.
Moi qui ne savais pas comment partir ma revue… en me relisant, je vois que ça n’a rien pour vous encourager. Mais c’est que EYE OF NIX ne fait rien non plus pour jouer les aguicheuses. Il fait sa propre musique et embarqueront bien qui voudront faire le même trip qu’eux.
Je pourrais aussi chercher des référents pour qu’on sache de quoi il s’agit mais il n’y en a pas vraiment. Bon mettons que le seul groupe que je connais qui ressemble un peu à ça est le groupe québécois Show of Bedlam. Je ne crois pas que ça avance grand monde de savoir ça à part les initiés que je salue.
Je vais donc y aller avec ce qui est venu me chercher au point de vouloir vous parler de EYE OF NIX.
– EYE OF NIX utilise une voix opératique féminine sur une musique Doom/Crust/Sludge. Un heureux mélange!! Par moment, quand Joy Von Spain utilise sa voix plus douce et grave, j’ai l’impression d’entendre Siouxsie Sioux fusionnée avec Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship) et ça cadre parfaitement avec le côté dark psychotique de la musique. La dame est également capable de s’enflammer et son chant crié est également bien fait.
– Le vocal masculin est plus dans un registre attendu pour le genre mais sa présence a l’avantage d’offrir un beau contraste à celle de Joy Von Spain.
– Il est impossible de prévoir ce qui arrivera dans leur musique. Euh j’aimerais bien élaborer ici mais ça dit ce que ça doit dire. Ne vous attendez donc à rien pour une écoute encore meilleure.
– D’une pièce à l’autre, il y a toujours un sentiment vaguement oppressant mais non étouffant.
Maintenant quelques commentaires concernant les pièces.
«Elysium Elusive» débute avec une vague atmosphère orientale et la sitar aurait très bien remplacé la guitare pour accompagner la superbe voix de Joy Von Spain. On se laisse transporter au son de sa voix et de la mélodie envoûtante sans soupçonner ce qui nous attend. C’est d’ailleurs une caractéristique de cet album que je vous ai mentionnée, il est impossible de prévoir ce qui arrivera. Tout doucement, je sens que la pièce monte en puissance mais jamais je n’aurais pensé qu’elle deviendrait un assaut Crust pendant que les vocalises féminines continueraient. Quel heureux mélange!!
«Veil», avec sa guitare claire, est celle qui m’a le plus amené dans l’univers dark wave des années 1980 et m’a fait penser à Siouxsie and the Banshee et aussi à The Cure et The Cult.
«Turned to Ash» débute avec une marche funèbre dont la rythmique est vaguement déformée. Et je vais dire de quoi de particulier mais pendant que j’écoutais «Turned to Ash», j’ai eu le goût d’entendre du Marlene Dietrich ou du Vera Lynn, ces icônes de la WWII qui chantaient la tristesse et l’agonie des champs de bataille.
Quand je parlais de surprendre, dans «Shroud» Joy crie et s’énerve.
«Optime Vero» m’a donné l’impression d’écouter des chants incantatoires dans le fond d’une crypte vaguement éclairée par la lueur des torches.
Avec «Blood In The Fire», j’ai eu l’impression encore une fois de me retrouver dans une salle mal éclairée où règnait également une atmosphère religieuse et je parle ici des anciens cabarets. Cette pièce a cette atmosphère bluesy mais attention car ça ne peut durer et ce blues offrira également quelques passes psychotiques.
La dernière, «Rome Burned», m’a surpris dans la façon qu’elle est mixée car j’avais vraiment l’impression que le était était surimposé sur le reste de la musique en copie-collé. Je n’avais pas ressenti ce drôle de feeling depuis les belles années du Computercore et je suis retourné écouter du xNEMISISx.
Si vous êtes à la recherche d’une musique qui est innovante, puissante et déstabilisante, je vous suggère fortement EYE OF NIX qui devrait être dans vos cordes avec son mélange de Doom, Sludge, Crust et Black totalement éclectique.

How to start this review? I must say immediately that I am still a little shaken by my first listen. In a case like this, better start from the beginning.
EYE OF NIX is a group formed in Seattle in 2012. It released a demo in 2013 and «Moros» is their first official album released in April 2015. I received the re-release that came out in November with two bonus tracks.
Now that I gave you its pedigree, I am still a little uncertain on how to talk to you about this album. Well, I can tell you right away that this music is definitely NOT for everyone which is a great point in its favor but at the same time, it is also why many may reject it without really listen to it.
WOW!! I did not know how to start my review … rereading this intro, I see that it has nothing to encourage you so far. You have to excuse me but it is in part because EYE OF NIX does nothing to be sexy but does great in shining in its own psychotic fashion way. It makes its own music and only those who want to embark on the same trip will jump on the train and enjoy its musical trip.
I could also seek references so that I could give you a clue about what it sounds like but there is not really. Well let me say the only group I know that sounds a bit like this is Montreal’s Show of Bedlam. I do not think many of you know about them except some insiders which I salute.
I guess I will go with what attracted me enough to decide me to tell you about EYE OF NIX.
– EYE OF NIX uses a female operatic voice over Doom/ Crust/ Sludge. A great but unexpected mix!! At times when Joy Von Spain uses her softer deeper voice, I feel like I hear Siouxsie Sioux merged with Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane/ Jefferson Starship) and it fits perfectly with the psychotic dark side of the music. The lady is also capable of igniting and her screamed vocals are also well done.
– The male vocal is more expected for the genre but its presence has the advantage of offering a nice contrast to that of Joy Von Spain.
– It is impossible to predict what will happen in their music. Uh!! I would like to develop here but it says what it has to say. So for an even better listening experience, do not try to foresee the song pathways.
– From one song to another, there is always an oppressive feeling but not overpowering.
Now a few comments about the songs.
«Elysium Elusive» begins with a vague oriental atmosphere and a sitar could have easily replaced the guitar to accompany the superb voice of Joy Von Spain. Let yourself be transported to the sound of her voice and the haunting melody without trying to figure out what lies ahead. This is a characteristic of this album that I mentioned to you before, it is impossible to predict what will happen so better just go with the flow. Slowly, the song gets stronger but I never thought it would become a Crust assault while the operatic female vocals continue. What a great mix!!
«Veil» with its clear guitar is the one that brought me the most in the Darkwave universe of the 1980s and reminded me of Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure and also The Cult.
«Turned to Ash» begins with a funeral march rhythm which is vaguely distorted. Here I will say something special and weird for some of you but as I listened to «Turned to Ash», I felt like listening to Marlene Dietrich and Vera Lynn, these icons of WWII singing the sadness of war and the agony of battlefields.
I said you could be surprised. Well, in «Shroud», Joy unsettled me with her screams and frenzy.
«Optime Vero» gave me the impression of listening to incantatory chants at the bottom of a crypt dimly lit by torchlight.
With «Blood In The Fire», I am sent again in a dimly lit room where some kind of religious atmosphere also reigned and I speak here of the old cabarets. This song has this bluesy atmosphere cabarets were known for but be careful because it can not last and this blues will also offer some psychotic portions.
The last song, «Rome Burned» surprised me in a differnent way and this came from how it is mixed. I really felt like the keyboard was superimposed on the rest of the music like a copy-paste. I had not felt this weird feeling since the heyday of Computercore and it sent me back to listen to xNEMISISx.
So if you are looking for music that is innovative, powerful and destabilizing, I highly suggest EYE OF NIX with its mix totally eclectic of Doom, Sludge, Crust and Black.
