Quand j’ai vu pour la première fois le groupe autrichien LOLITA KOMPLEX, j’avoue que leur imagerie m’a tout de suite conquis. J’ai un faible pour les groupes costumés et c’est définitivement réussi ici. Regardez de nouveau la pochette!
Le fait qu’il était mentionné goth metal a eu l’effet d’augmenter ma curiosité, alors me voici à vous parler de «The Greatest Show on Earth», leur deuxième album après «Le Cabaret des Marionnettes» paru en 2011.
C’est l’acteur Nigel Barber (qui joue dans les nouveaux «James Bond» et «Mission:Impossible» et qui a joué dans «Attack of the Killer Tomatoes») qui nous invite, dans la formulation classique appropriée au monde du cirque, à assister au «Greatest Show on Earth».
«Circus (welcome to the)» débute avec une ritournelle de cirque à l’accordéon avant que le tout devienne thrash metal. C’est le temps de vous lancer dans le pit pour nous montrer vos meilleurs moves de… Jive. Quoi! Tu ne sais pas danser le Jive!! Bein voyons donc! Bah, tu peux toujours continuer à faire un peu de circle pit parce que la drive de la rythmique le permet amplement. Ça fera comme au cirque quand les acrobates (Jivers) sont au centre et que les cavaliers (Moshers) tournent autour de la piste. Il y aura une petite passe death mélodique pour assurer la charge des cavaliers. Quand reviendra la musique de cirque… ne partez pas, c’est tout simplement le temps de changer les performeurs sur la piste. Voici un court moment de breakdowns pour les contorsionnistes (Hardcore kids). Il y en a donc pour plusieurs goûts dans cette chanson et le mix est super cool. Ça fait une très bonne pièce zombie metal à la touche moderne. Ça a une maudite bonne drive et la portion core n’est pas dissonante. La présence de deux vocaux différents (fille et gars) est également très intéressante.
Si vous avez aimé le côté un peu éclectique de cette première pièce, dites-vous que ce ne sera pas la norme toutefois, mais que vous retrouverez tout de même cette atmosphère tirée du monde des Misfits sur le zombie rock «One in a Million» et sur «Masquerade» qui m’a aussi fait sentir la drive de «Black Sunshine» de White Zombie. Ce seront aussi les pièces les plus metal de l’album. Remarquez que «Hide and Seek» est un hybride intéressant de death, pop goth et indie rock.
La deuxième pièce de l’album, «The Awakening» est annonciatrice de la tendance qui teintera le reste de l’album avec une sonorité pop goth bien assumée et surtout bien amenée. Le refrain avec échos est catchy et l’enchaînement avec les couplets de la demoiselle est trop cheesy pour ne pas être apprécié. Le côté crooner dans «Rumpelstielzchen» est vraiment cool. «Nothing but Smoke and Mirrors» vient jouer dans la cour de The Cure, Joy Division et Sister Of Mercy ce qui amène une belle variante. Encore là, j’ai trouvé que que l’échange entre les vocaux est bien et le chanteur utilise un clean plus sérieux que dans sa passe de crooner et montre bonne maitrise vocale aussi.
Dans tout album de goth pop qui se respecte, ça prend une ballade. «The Great Deception» est cette balade et aurait pu se retrouver sur un disque de Avril Lavigne.
À partir de la onzième pièce, ce sont des remix. Ça commence avec un remix acoustique de «Dance With Me», une chanson de l’album précédent, «Le Cabaret des Marionnettes». Vient ensuite une version symphonique de «Masquerade». L’ajout des claviers l’amène du côté CyberMetal à la The Kovenant et j’ai beaucoup apprécié. Je me permet de dire que c’est une version Big Band de «Masquerade» que LOLITA KOMPLEX doit faire maintenant. Il me semble que ça aurait été punché avec un ensemble de cuivre et tant qu’à y être pourquoi ne pas faire la passe de piano en style jazzy à ce moment-là.
L’album se termine avec une troisième reprise, «Bakteria», aussi tirée de «Le Cabaret des Marionnettes», cette fois réalisée par le groupe allemand lluminate, une ballade electro qui nous amène tranquillement vers la fin.
Si vous trippez sur les Misfits, Wednesday 13 et tout ce qui touche le zombie rock mais avec un côté plus goth pop que punk rock, je crois que LOLITA KOMPLEX est un groupe que vous devez découvrir. Il a ce côté un peu plus pop que les groupes précédemment mentionnés mais a un aspect moderne et aussi un imaginaire éclaté que les autres n’ont pas.

When I saw for the first time the Austrian band LOLITA KOMPLEX, I admit that their imagery conquered me right away. I have a weakness for costumed groups and it is definitely well done here. Look once again at the album cover!
The fact that it was mentioned Goth Metal had the effect of increasing my curiosity so here I am telling you about «The Greatest Show on Earth», its second album after «Le Cabaret des Marionnettes» released in 2011.
This is the actor Nigel Barber (who stars in the new James Bond and Mission: Impossible and who starred in Attack of the Killer Tomatoes) who invites us, in the appropriate classic circus formulation, to attend the «Greatest Show on Earth».
«Circus (welcome to the)» starts with a circus jingle on the accordion before everything becomes thrash metal. This is the time you jump into the pit to show your best move of … Jive. What! You do not know the latest best Jive move!! Shame on you! Well, you can always continue to do some circle pit because the rhythmic drive allows ample. It will be as when the circus acrobats (Jivers) are in the center and the horse riders (Moshers) rotate around the track. There will be a small melodic death portion to ensure the load jumpers. When circus music returns … do not leave, it’s just time to bring in more performers on the track. Here comes some breakdowns for the contortionnistes (Hardcore kids). There is therefore to several tastes in this song and the mix is cool. It’s a very good Zombie Metal song with a modern twist. It has a damned good drive and the core portion is not dissonant. Having two different voice (a girl and a guy) is also very interesting.
If you liked the somewhat eclectic side of this first song, I can tell you that this is not the norm however, but you will find this atmosphere out of the world of Misfits on the Zombie Rock «One in a Million» and on «Masquerade» that made me feel the drive of «Black Sunshine» by White Zombie. This will also be the most Metal songs of the album. Note that «Hide and Seek» is an interesting hybrid with his Death Metal, Goth and Indie Pop Rock interlude.
The second song of the album, «The Awakening» announces the trend that mostly color the rest of the album with a Pop/Goth side well served. The chorus is catchy with echoes and the link with the verses of the girl is too cheesy for not being appreciated.
The crooner style vocals in «Rumpelstielzchen» is really cool. «Nothing but Smoke and Mirrors» comes to play in the courtyard of The Cure, Joy Division and Sister Of Mercy and again, I found that the interactions between the two voices are good and the singer used a more serious clean vocal than in his crooner pattern and shows a beautiful voice too.
Any respectable Pop/Goth album needs a ballad. «The Great Deception » is this cheesy emotional ballad that could have ended up on a Avril Lavigne‘s album.
From the eleventh song and on, these are remixes. It starts with an acoustic remix of «Dance With Me», a song from the previous album. Next is a symphonic version of «Masquerade». Adding keyboards makes it a CyberMetal song in the style of Kovenant and I really enjoyed it. I allow myself to say that this is a Big Band version of «Masquerade» that LOLITA KOMPLEX must do now. I think it would have been so great with a punchy brass section and why not make the piano sound more jazzy.
The album ends with a third cover, «Bakteria» also taken from the previous album, this time performed by the German group lluminate; an electro ballad that brings us quietly towards the end.
If you dig The Misfits, Wednesday 13 and everything that touches the Zombie Rock but would be more interested in a more Pop than Punk Rock approach, I think LOLITA KOMPLEX is a group that you must discover. It has that side a bit more pop than the aforementioned groups but has a modern approach and also a weird imagination that others do not.
