Le groupe français ELVENSTORM vient de faire paraître deux chansons originales doublées de reprises et comme je ne le connaissais pas, je me suis dit que ce serait le moment idéal pour me faire une idée de sa musique. Un bon timing aussi puisque j’imagine que c’est pour nous présenter son nouveau bassiste et nous donner quelque chose à nous mettre sous la dent en attendant la suite que le groupe a fait paraître ce mini-CD, car il vient tout juste de sortir un deuxième album complet, «Blood Leads to Glory», en 2014.
Dès le départ de «Soulreaper», la signature est claire. C’est du pur old school speed/power metal. On ne peut faire autrement que de penser à du vieux Helloween autant pour la rythmique et la tonalité que l’exécution des solos; même le vocal de Laura (ah oui, j’avais oublié de mentionner que c’est une fille qui s’occupe du vocal avec brio) s’inscrit dans le son des vétérans allemands. Ça n’a pas été très long avant que je me mette à taper du pied. C’est une très bonne pièce avec toute la drive désirée et j’apprécie que la production laisse de la place pour la basse. Dans le metal actuel, le twin guitar assault a souvent la fâcheuse tendance à enterrer la basse, mais pas ici puisqu’il n’y a qu’une guitare et qu’elle n’est pas effrontément mise trop de l’avant.
«Sworn to the Dark» continue dans le même esprit et encore une fois une frénésie s’empare de mes jambes. ELVENSTORM ne lève pas le pied de l’accélérateur.
Dès que j’ai su à quelle enseigne se logeait ELVENSTORM, j’étais curieux d’entendre «Black Magic» de Slayer. Dans le cas de «Tyrants» de Heaven’s Gate, le rapprochement se faisait plus naturellement puisque c’est également un groupe de power metal allemand avec des vocaux aigus alors c’est parfaitement ce que Laura m’a montré dans les deux pièces originales. Mais Slayer… Je dois dire que le contraste entre la voix de Laura et la tonalité de la musique ne m’a pas plu mais par contre, si j’écoute la voix en oubliant la musique et vice versa, chacun est bon. Ce fut difficile d’oublier Araya en écoutant cette chanson. De toute façon, je veux plus de chansons originales car je ne suis pas très friand des reprises.
Ma première rencontre avec ELVENSTORM s’avère très positive. Si ces deux pièces sont annonciatrices des choses à venir, j’en veux définitivement plus. Si vous avez aimé le heavy/speed metal allemand des années 1980, peut-être que vous ne le savez pas encore, mais vous aussi dès que vous entendrez ELVENSTORM, vous en voudrez plus, et comme je ne crois pas que vous vous contenterez de jouer ces deux pièces en boucle infinie jusqu’à la sortie du prochain album, procurez-vous également son prédécesseur «Blood Leads to Glory».

The French band ELVENSTORM just released two original songs coupled with two covers and as I did not know this band, I thought it would be the perfect time to get an idea of its music. A good timing also because I imagine it is to present its new bassist and give a taste of what’s to come that the band has released this mini-CD, as it has just released a second full album, «Blood Leads to Glory» in 2014.
From the start of «Soulreaper», the signature is clear. This is pure Old School Speed/Power Metal. I could not help but think of the old Helloween as much for the rhythm and tone as for the way solos are executed; even Laura‘s vocals (oh yes, I forgot to mention that this is a girl who does those vocals so brilliantly) fit in perfectly to cast this impression. It did not take long before my feet stomped to the beat. This is a very good song with all the desired drive and I appreciate that the production leaves room for the bass. In today’s Metal, the twin guitar assault often has the unfortunate tendency to bury the bass, but not here since there is only one guitar and it is not put up front.
«Sworn to the Dark» continues with the same drive and again a frenzy took hold of my legs. ELVENSTORM does not lift the foot off the accelerator.
As soon as I figured out ELVENSTORM‘s brand of Metal, I was curious to hear Slayer‘s «Black Magic». In the case of Heaven’s Gate‘s «Tyrants», since it is also a German Power Metal band with high pitch vocals, it fits perfectly with what Laura showed me on the two original songs. But Slayer … I must say I did not like the contrast between the voice of Laura and the tone of the music but cons, if I listen to the voice, forgetting the music and vice versa, everyone is good. I guess I could not forget Araya. Anyway, I want more original songs because I am not very fond of covers.
My first encounter with ELVENSTORM is very positive. If these two songs are harbingers of things to come, I definitely want more. If you liked the German Heavy/Speed metal of the 1980s, maybe you do not know it yet, but as soon as you will hear ELVENSTORM, you will want more, and as I do not think you will content yourself to play these two songs in a loop until the release of the next album, grab also its predecessor «Blood Leads to Glory».
