Salut ma gang de vous autres ! Aujourd’hui, je vous fais une mini critique d’un groupe hommage à The Cure. Le groupe CUREZUM, dont le nom est la combinaison de The Cure et Burzum, est un groupe d’Extreme Metal composé de Rob Vikernes, Mort Subite (Megaton Leviathan), Billy Anderson (Melvins, Porn, Bénédiction des Porcs, Deathstench) et Martti Hill. Selon le groupe, la formation The Cure est une source d’inspiration pour le côté sombre de la musique et est un modèle pour les musiciens à travers un large éventail de genres allant jusqu’au Extreme Metal. CUREZUM aimerait amener une toute nouvelle vision des albums sombres tel que «Pornography» et «Faith». Selon la critique, «Pornography» paru en 1982, est considéré comme le plus sombre et le plus triste de la carrière de The Cure. Malgré tout cela, il a été parmi le top 10 britannique dès sa sortie.
La première pièce du EP est «One Hundred Years». La pièce originale est la première sur l’album «Pornography». Pour ce qui est de la version de CUREZUM, j’ai vraiment adoré la touche Metal. On reconnaît facilement la pièce par l’arrangement du drum et le riff de guitare très répétitif. Par contre, pour la voix, c’est vraiment différent, c’est clairement un genre de voix criarde (scream) à la Black Metal scandinave. Je n’ai pas trouvé pourtant que ça ressemblait à du Burzum. Les notes de guitares n’étaient pas très longues et distorsionnées, même le solo de guitare de la fin de la pièce est semblable à l’original, «clean» et bien rendu.
La deuxième pièce est «The Top». C’est la dernière chanson sur l’album du même nom paru en 1984. À ce moment, The Cure vivait des changements de musiciens ce qui peut être défini comme un autre moment noir pour ce groupe. Pour être franche, j’ai dû écouter la version originale pour reconnaître la pièce. Dans la pièce originale, il y a une pulsation qui est dirigé par la batterie mais que je n’arrivais pas à reconnaître ici. Dans la version de CUREZUM, le batteur joue avec les pédales doubles ce qui change totalement l’ambiance. J’ai trouvé que celle-ci se rapprochait plus du genre de Burzum, surtout du côté de la voix. La voix était criarde et amplifiée. Je ne veux insulter personne mais pour ma part, j’ai toujours trouvé que Burzum était un groupe sale musicalement. J’ai l’impression que ses pièces sont mal enregistrées tellement le son est lourd et gras. Je ne trippe pas là-dessus. Par contre, il y a une qualité d’enregistrement que j’apprécie chez CUREZUM. Même si la pièce est lourde et lente avec une intention crasseuse (le seul lien que je vois avec Burzum), CUREZUM est capable d’atteindre une qualité musicale. Vers la fin de la pièce, le solo de guitare avait un effet psychédélique ou quelque chose du genre que j’ai vraiment trouvé intéressant. J’ai recommencé ce moment plusieurs fois sans me tanner.
Je crois sincèrement que ce groupe tient ici quelque chose d’intéressant car leur concept de transposer les pièces de The Cure dans un style Metal est une excellente idée, si c’est bien fait. Pour l’instant leur teaser m’a séduite. La question que je me pose: est-ce que CUREZUM va rester dans les vieux albums sombres, mélancoliques et tristes ou va-t’il oser aller vers les chansons plus pop new wave de la discographie de The Cure? C’est une histoire à suivre de très près. J’ai hâte den entendre plus.

Hi! Today I did a review for a tribute band for The Cure. CUREZUM, whose name is the combination of The Cure and Burzum, is a group of Extreme Metal consisting of Rob Vikernes, Mort Subite (Megaton Leviathan), Billy Anderson (Melvins, Porn, Bénédiction des Porcs, Deathstench) and Martti Hill (Barrowlands). According to them, The Cure is an inspiration for the dark side of music and is a model for musicians across a wide range of genres up to Extreme Metal. CUREZUM started this cause it wanted to bring a whole new vision to The Cure‘s music, taking the atmosphere of «Pornography», «Faith» and other classics, and reworking the music into harsher moods. According to the critics, .«Pornography» released in 1982, is considered the darkest and saddest album of The Cure‘s career. Despite all this, it was among the top 10 in UK chart right from its release.
The first song of the EP is «One Hundred Years». The original song is the first one on the «Pornography» album. As for the version of CUREZUM, I really loved the Metal version. I easily recognized the song by the arrangement of the drum and the very repetitive guitar riff. By cons, the vocal is really different. It is a kind of shrill voice (scream) clearly pointing to the Scandinavian Black Metal. It have not yet felt that it sounded like Burzum. Guitar notes were not very long or distorted, and even the guitar solo at the end of the song is like on the original, clean and well made.
The second song is «The Top». This is the last song on the album of the same name, released in 1984. At that time, The Cure was experiencing member changes which can be defined as another dark moment for this group. To be honest, I had to listen to the original version to recognize the cover. In the original song, there is a pulse that is directed by the drum but I could not recognize it here. In the CUREZUM version, the drummer plays with the double bassdrum pedal which totally changes the mood. I thought it was closer to the genre of Burzum, especially for the vocal. The voice was shrill and amplified. I do not want to insult anyone but I have always thought that Burzum was a dirty band musically. I felt that their songs were so poorly recorded making their sound too raw. I am not a fan of this. By cons, there is a recording quality I appreciate in CUREZUM. Although the song is heavy and slow with a filthy intent (the only link I see with Burzum), it is able to achieve musical quality. Towards the end of the guitar solo, there is a psychedelic effect or something like that that I really liked listening to. I listened to that part several times over and over with pleasure.
I sincerely believe that this group here holds something interesting because their concept of transposing The Cure music in a Metal style is a great idea, if it is done right. For now their teaser seduced me. The question I ask myself: will CUREZUM concentrate on the old dark albums, that are melancholic and sad, or will it dare to go to the more pop new wave songs from the discography of The Cure? It is a story to follow very closely. I am looking forward to hear more.
