Tous, participent aux «back vocals».
Ça m’a vraiment accroché.
Cette femme va toujours me surprendre.

This Montreal group, created in 2013, does not need a very big introduction for those who follow the Montreal scene. It is composed of Holy Decay (vocals), Riff (guitar and programming), Carl Puzzle (bass) and Dany Burton (drums and programming). All of them participate in the back vocals. «Crawling«, which I present to you today, is their first original album coming out after the release in March 2016 of «Burn the Monsters» a compilation of the two previous EPs «Burn My Soul» et «Free The Monsters» to which they added the unreleased single «Bleed Out«. I want to mention that this band is a real cooperation. Everyone gets involved in the composition, both in lyrics and in music. Together, they draw inspiration from their lives, from their surroundings and from the hectic life that is theresides in Montreal.
The album starts with a short electronic intro titled «Filth«, which automatically connects to the second track «Broken«. I had the impression that the transition between the two songs could have been blended a little better. On the other hand, when the second song starts, one recognizes well the angry musical fury of the group and especially the shouting of Holy. I heard more the presence of the guitar than on the old songs.
We continue listening with «Pretty». Unlike the previous song, you can hear the singer’s beautiful voice, cause for this one he sings more than he screams. Despite the good rhythm of the song, I thought its musical signature was a little linear. The following song is the title track of the album, «Crawling«. I loved the mix between the percussion and the vocal. That really got me hooked. I will appear cliché with my next sentence. I find that the group bears his name well with this kind of song. It made me want to start a mortal lascivious dance.
I searched on their various pages to find information about this new album. I thus discovered that the song «Freak Show» benefits from the collaboration of Natasha Nebula. This woman is one of the most impressive performers on the Burlesque / Trash / BDSM / Extreme scene. She gets hung by the skin with hooks to fly over the crowd, she charms snakes, she dances with fire, and so on. On top of that, she sings / scream. This woman will always surprise me. She is stuffed with talent and has a lot of guts. The song is very well named. I felt like I was in a circus or an abandoned amusement park and that something very serious was going to happen.
«DeadSex» is musically the one that resembles the most to the Graveyard Strippers‘ sound I know. Musicality it’s more Metal / Alternative. I also took the opportunity to watch the video of this song. On the viewing side, the photographic direction is very «dark» and authentic. The woman who accompanies and tortures the singer is none other than the sublime Natasha Nebula. It’s really intense to watch and I love it.
For the next song, the title is mentioned after the first few seconds. It’s clearly yelled by Holy and can’t be missed. What I liked about this song were the musical breaks. They give a sense of anxiety and stress. A bit like if time was stopping. It is very well executed, I adore it.
Unfortunately, I did not like «Walking Dead«. It did not appeal to me at all, even with the sounds of zombies. Most albums have a song I don’t like at all, well this is the one.
On the other hand, the next one, «Savior» is a song that I really liked, but not for the right reasons you might say. Holy has a wonderful voice and thanks for finally demonstrating it in this song. He screams less and gives us a chance to hear his voice. Also, there is very interesting guitar «Noise». It felts like a hybrid between Stoner and alternative-rock. It may sound like an odd mix but it is very interesting.
«Krash This Up» is the WTF song of the album. I did not understand it. I felt like it was sped up. The voice is very acute and very fast, a bit like a rap. The musicality is fast and of a palpable violence. I wasa still trying to understand it and «pouf», it is finished. I think that was the goal.
We reach the end of the album with «King Me» and «Serial Killer«. These are the two songs that have the most electronic «sampling». My favorite song is the last one, «Serial Killer«. I love the high and sharp electronic sample that mixes with the heavy music. It is a charm to my ears. In this song, there is also a guitar line that comes more forward on the music. It’s new and very nice.
Despite the two songs that I have less appreciated, the album is very good. I recognized their very personal musicality. On the other hand, there is more electronic sampling. Also, I noticed that they put forward a few guitar lines that pierce the songs. Percussions are always as present and rhythmically good. On the other hand, I felt that the bass was too much in the background. Normally, this is the instrument I hear the most, because it is one of my favorite instruments. This time, I felt I did not hear it enough. It could have been a little louder in the mix. Whatever its lows, it’s still an excellent album, worthy of Graveyard Strippers. I love the collaboration they have with Natasha Nebula. I think it gives them a greater artistic staging. She performs live with them, she prepares shortcakes for their shows, she participates in some songs, and so on. I think it’s a big plus for them.
I give the album a 9/10
